88-year-old crossing guard dies saving 2 children from car

It’s easy to think that heroes are just fictional characters found in comic books and Marvel movies. However, the reality is that heroes are all around us, embodied by individuals who perform remarkable acts, often at great personal cost.

One such hero was Bob Nill, a beloved crossing guard in Kansas City, Kansas, who sacrificed his life in 2020 to protect children. At 88 years old, Bob had dedicated five years to his role at Christ the King Parish School, earning the affection of students who fondly referred to him as ‘Mr. Bob.’ Tragically, on a Tuesday morning in 2020, a speeding black sedan barreled through Nill’s crosswalk around 8 a.m. Recognizing the imminent danger, Nill bravely stepped in front of the vehicle to save two children.

Principal Cathy Fithian shared with KMBC 9 that he intervened with two children, and thankfully they listened, but unfortunately, he became the victim in the process.

According to Fox 4, witnesses reported that the 88-year-old man pushed the kids back as a car rushed by, which sadly resulted in him being hit.

Randy, Nill’s nephew, mentioned that this brave action was typical of his uncle. He remarked, ‘What my Uncle Bob did to help those little kids cross the street might seem insignificant to some, but for him, it was a vital task, and now we truly understand its significance. He may have saved lives.’ Before retiring, Nill had a career in banking and served in the Coast Guard.

After leaving his full-time job, he took on the role of a crossing guard to keep contributing to his community.

Randy mentioned that he believed he could assist children while also feeling good about his contributions. Additionally, Christ the King Parish School shared a statement on their Facebook page.

We would like to give you an update on our crossing guard, Mr. Nill. Our hearts are heavy as we inform you of his passing. Please continue to keep Mr. Nill and his family in your prayers as well as the students, parents, and teachers who witnessed today’s accident.

“Also know that Mr. Nill is a hero. He stopped two of our students from crossing the road as the car approached.”

Farewell, Bob Nill. Your courageous deeds have made a difference in many lives, and you will forever be honored as a hero. Please share this article to celebrate the legacy of this remarkable individual.
